AI has made creating marketing content easier than ever.

Give ChatGPT a topic, and within seconds you can have a LinkedIn post, newsletter or blog article ready to go.

The problem is that your competitors can do exactly the same thing.

We are increasingly seeing content that is technically correct, grammatically perfect and completely forgettable. The challenge for businesses is no longer simply creating enough content. It is creating content that sounds like your business, demonstrates genuine expertise and gives potential customers a reason to trust you.

So, how do you use AI without allowing your marketing to become generic?

1. Start with your customer, not the prompt

Before asking AI to create content, you need to understand exactly who you are speaking to.

Go beyond basic demographics. What problems are your customers dealing with? What frustrates them? What are they trying to achieve? What might stop them from buying? What questions are they asking your sales team?

This information should influence the topics you choose, the examples you use and the way you communicate.

If you cannot clearly answer these questions yourself, AI is unlikely to produce content that genuinely connects with your customers.

2. Give AI your expertise

One of the biggest mistakes we see is asking AI to create something from almost nothing.

“Write a LinkedIn post about cybersecurity” will probably give you a perfectly acceptable post.

It will probably also sound like hundreds of other posts about cybersecurity.

Instead, start with something only your business can provide.

A conversation you had with a customer. A mistake you regularly see. A question your team gets asked repeatedly. A project that taught you something. An opinion about what is happening in your industry.

AI can then help you structure and refine that knowledge rather than inventing the substance of the content.

3. Define what your brand actually sounds like

Your brand voice needs more detail than “professional and friendly”.

Consider the words you use, the words you would never use, how technical your communication should be, how much personality belongs in your content and how your customers naturally communicate.

This becomes particularly important for international businesses.

Directly translating content from one market into another does not necessarily make it relevant. German messaging, for example, may need to be adapted for an Australian audience while retaining the expertise, credibility and identity behind the original brand.

Authenticity does not mean saying exactly the same thing everywhere. It means remaining recognisable while understanding the audience in front of you.

4. Build a content system around real business knowledge

This is where businesses can make AI significantly more useful.

Create a central source of information that includes your customer personas, brand voice, values, services, FAQs, case studies, customer objections, previous content and subject matter expertise.

AI now has context.

The final step should still involve human judgement. Does this sound like us? Is the information accurate? Is there a reason somebody should care? Does it support what we want to be known for?

AI can create content. Someone still needs to manage the strategy.

For some businesses, managing this internally works extremely well, particularly when someone has the time and marketing knowledge to oversee the strategy, extract knowledge from the wider team and maintain consistency.

For others, that becomes another task sitting on an already very long list.

That is where working with an external marketing team can be valuable. The role of an agency is changing too. It is no longer simply about writing posts.

It is about understanding the business, asking the right questions, finding the stories and expertise worth sharing, understanding the customer, maintaining consistency and using AI where it genuinely makes the process more efficient.

AI can help you create more content, but your business still needs to give people a reason to choose you.
